National Highways is improving safety on the M1 between junctions 10 and 13, covering 15.5 miles of the M1 in Bedfordshire.
I last wrote to you on 5 March 2025; to let you know we’d be removing the roadworks between junctions 12 (Flitwick) and 11a (Chalton Interchange) which are the junctions either side of Toddington Services.
I’m pleased to report these roadworks were removed on Friday 21 March 2025 – removing the last remaining roadworks from the M1 between junctions 10 and 13 in Bedfordshire, following the completion of safety enhancement work.
We do however still have a programme to install ten new CCTV cameras and upgrade thirty-two others between junctions 10 to 13. We expect this work to be completed using overnight closures only by June 2025.
We had initially planned to extend the southbound entry slip road at Toddington Services. These works were intended to provide better access for vehicles joining the M1 from Toddington services and to improve traffic flow.
Following earlier safety work at Toddington Services, including improved signage, and new steel barrier to improve visibility, safety at this location has already seen significant improvements.
We are pleased to say that these improvements have already contributed to a safer environment for drivers, and the evidence suggests that no further major interventions are necessary at this time. This, together with the physical and environmental restraints on construction work, means that there is no longer a case to carry out further work at Toddington services on safety grounds.
We’ll continue to keep local residents and stakeholders informed about the progress of our remaining work, including details about any planned overnight closures and other disruptions.
We’ll publish regular updates on our project webpage which can be accessed at:
www.nationalhighways.co.uk/M1junction10-13. We’re working closely with colleagues across National Highways to ensure that these works are coordinated with other maintenance projects on the network to minimise disruption to the public.
