We have received the following information from National Highways:
Important roadworks information
M1 between junctions 9 (Friars Wash Interchange) and 14 (Broughton Interchange) – planned maintenance works
I am writing to tell you that we plan to carry out planned maintenance works on the M1 between junctions 9 and 14. These works include technology repairs, drainage activities, surface repairs and sign cleaning. This work is needed to maintain and repair the equipment we use to monitor our network and manage traffic flows.
We will carry out this work across four nights starting Wednesday 23 September 2026, working between 10pm and 5am, weather permitting.
Closures and diversions
To carry out the work safely we will need to close sections of the M1 and divert traffic as follows:
Wednesday 23 September – M1 northbound junctions 9 to 11a:
- Drivers will be diverted onto the M1 southbound to junction 9
- Join the A5183 and continue onto London Road, High Street and Watling Street
- At the A505 roundabout, take the second exit
- Continue along the Dunstable Northern Bypass
Thursday 24 September – M1 northbound junctions 11a to 14:
- Drivers will follow the A5 and then the A505
- Continue onto the A4146 and return to the A5
- Rejoin the M1 at junction 14
Friday 25 September – M1 southbound junctions 14 to 11a:
- Drivers will leave the M1 at junction 14 and follow the A5
- Continue onto the A4146 and then the A505
- Follow the A5 southbound
- Rejoin the M1 at junction 11a
Saturday 26 September – M1 southbound junctions 11a to 9:
- Drivers will be directed onto the M1 northbound to junction 11a
- Continue along the Dunstable Northern Bypass
- Take the first exit onto Watling Street
- Continue via High Street and London Road
- Follow the A5183 to rejoin the M1 at junction 9
Please note emergency vehicles will have access through the works with caution
